If you travel to London to see Arsenal play, it is advisable to extend your trip by one or two days in order to experience this fantastic city.

Briefly about Emirates Stadium

Many faithful fans of Arsenal were terrified when plans of a new stadium were brought up at the end of the 1990’s. Highbury was a legendary stadium where Arsenal had celebrated great triumphs, but at the same time it was clear that Arsenal had grown out of Highbury. The stadium could only take 38,500 spectators and was relatively small. Since 2006 the Emirates Stadium is the home address for Arsenal.

Facts about Emirates Stadium

Emirates is the third largest stadium for football on the English islands. Only Wembley and Old Trafford are bigger. Emirates Stadium can hold 60,361 spectators. Since the stadium is relatively new, the record attendance is the same as its capacity.

In 1997 Arsenal decided that it was time to move to a new stadium. They first contemplated trying to get a permit to expand Highbury, but the local government bodies didn’t favor this. They therefore bought an old abandoned industrial area called Ashburton Grove and drew up plans for a new, modern stadium.

It took a couple of years before the groundbreaking took place, and funding was a big problem. Thanks to funding from Emirates Airlines, however, the construction could begin in 2004. Two years later, in July of 2006, the stadium was finished. The costs for it turned out to be nigh on astronomical. In total, Emirates payed nearly five billion Swedish crowns. Because of the sponsorship from Emirates Airlines, the stadium will be called Emirates Stadium at least up until the 2021/2022 season.

Few stadiums in England are as easy to get to as Emirates Stadium. If you want to see Arsenal play a home game, you have many options to get to the stadium. You can take the subway, for example. If you have tickets for the north part of the stadium, it is a good idea to get off at the Arsenal Tube Station. The Highbury & Islington Station is best if you have tickets for the southern part.
